Animal Care

Animal Care professionals at WPZ are experts in their field and national leaders in providing the highest quality care for animals every day. The zoo manages approximately 1,100 animals, the largest live collection in Washington State representing nearly 300 species, including 40 that are endangered or threatened.

Community Asset

For more than 100 years WPZ has served as an urban oasis, gathering generations of people together to enjoy the natural world. With more than one million visitors annually and nearly 38,000 members, the zoo is a cultural hub for the region where people celebrate special occasions, participate in backyard habitat workshops and enjoy summer concerts in a beautiful natural setting.

Conservation

From sustainability efforts on zoo grounds to saving endangered species at home and abroad, WPZ is taking direct conservation action around the world. In just over a decade the zoo has garnered 17 awards for innovative approaches to global wildlife conservation, and in 2009 its international Partners for Wildlife funded 38 programs in 50 countries.

Education

Both inside and outside the classroom, WPZ brings science-based curriculum to life through hands-on learning and eye-opening experiences.

Our Staff

The reason that WPZ is able to contribute to our local, regional and global community is due to the commitment, talent, passion, flexibility and creativity of our amazing staff members. With approximately 260 year-round employees and approximately 120 seasonal and temporary employees from diverse backgrounds who value inclusion, the zoo is a remarkable environment. Many employees say that the best thing about working at the zoo is working with their co-workers!
